Caring for your Malqeta piece
A Malqeta challah cover is made to last generations. The care it receives determines how many.
Each piece has been embroidered by hand using traditional techniques — Zardozi goldwork, metallic threads, and hand-sewn beads that are delicate by nature. With the right handling and storage, your piece will remain as it was the day it arrived.
Zardozi & Hand-Embroidered Pieces (Bareket & Argaman)
Professional dry cleaning only. Do not wash at home.
- No water — the metallic threads and beading are not water-safe.
- No wringing or twisting — the embroidery is mounted on a base fabric that can distort.
- No direct ironing on the embroidery — heat will damage metallic thread and flatten raised goldwork.
- No bleach — bleach will destroy both thread and fabric irreversibly.
- Roll loosely or lay flat for storage and transport — never fold on embroidered areas.
If in doubt, contact a specialist textile conservator or write to us at info@malqeta.com before attempting any cleaning.
Machine-Embroidered Pieces (Shani)
- Gentle cool hand wash — maximum 30°C water temperature.
- Use a mild detergent only — no harsh chemicals or fabric conditioners with bleaching agents.
- Do not wring or twist — gently press out excess water.
- Lay flat to dry in shade — do not machine dry and keep away from direct sunlight while wet.
- Do not machine wash — even a delicate cycle risks damage to the embroidery.
- Light steam iron on the reverse side only — never iron directly on the embroidery.
Storage
- Store flat or rolled (not folded) in the dust bag provided with your order.
- Keep away from direct sunlight, which can fade both thread and fabric over time.
- Keep away from moisture and damp environments — store in a cool, dry place.
- Keep away from sharp objects that could snag or pull the embroidery.
- Do not store under heavy items — pressure can flatten and distort raised embroidery.
Handling
- Handle with clean, dry hands when embroidery is freshly worked — oils from skin can transfer to thread.
- Avoid contact with perfume, oils, or hairspray directly on the embroidery — these will stain metallic threads permanently.
- Gold and silver thread is delicate — do not rub aggressively or attempt to clean with friction.
- Loose beads or thread ends are best addressed by a professional — do not attempt to re-attach yourself without experience.
